Apply for a premium reduction: Here's how to proceed
The premium reduction reduces the health insurance bill. One application applies to the entire household. Complete processing takes around two months - if the invoice is currently unpayable, additional direct contact is required.

You submit the application in Basel-Stadt. One application per household is sufficient.
Moved from another canton in the current year
In principle, the previous canton remains responsible for the current year. In Basel-Stadt you submit the application in November or December for the following year.
Moved in from abroad
The claim can apply from the start of the insurance within three months of the start of the insurance. Later it generally applies from the month following the application.
Invoice cannot be paid now
The premium reduction is not immediate emergency aid. Contact the health insurance company and the social security office immediately instead of waiting around two months for processing.

Prepare these documents
- Insurance policies of all persons
- Proof of income for the last three months
- Bank, postal account and asset records
- Proof of training for children aged 18 to 25 in initial training
- In the event of separation or divorce: maintenance, payment and custody documents
Deadlines and time
For complete documents, processing takes approximately two months. The most recent tax assessment generally serves as the basis for calculation. If there is a deviation of at least 20 percent, current documents are required.
What happens next
- You will receive a written confirmation or rejection.
- The contribution goes directly to the health insurance company and is deducted from the premium bill.
- You do not have to reapply every year.
- Report changes in income or assets of at least 20 percent and a change in health insurance provider immediately.
